! You guys should definitely check out her blog , where she shares devotionals and scripture references. Now, first off I am going to answer the questions Melody posed to us. Then I am going to share my co-authors answers.
Why do I write about what I write about? For reference I write fictional stories. I love writing fictional stories because it gives me a chance to go into a new world, somewhat, and those stories I want to read I get to write and make go the way I want it to. Plus, I love it!
When did you first decide that you wanted to be a writer, and what led you to that decision? I decided I wanted to be a writer when I was about nine or ten. My older sister had a writing group and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. I had so many fun ideas, and I loved reading. And, as any younger sister does, I wanted to do what my older sister was doing. So I started writing. I started so many stories, that were quite awful, and never really finished them. Then about 13 or 14 I finished writing a short story that I loved. It was a little fairytale. I handwrote it though, and so I gave it to a friend to type into the computer. She started and then lost the story. She still has it 3 to 4 years later, I’m working on getting back at the moment. Once I finished that story I realized I wanted to keep writing stories that I could make up.
What is your dream job? My dream job is being an elementary education teacher. This doesn’t sound like much, but I loved the idea of teaching children. I get to work with children, and I get to make the next generation of children smarter and hard working.
Rabbits or hamsters? Rabbits. Specifically bunnies.
If you could only use Substack, Spotify, or Pinterest, which one would you use? Spotify, if I had premium. Because there are podcasts and music, and I could not live without music. But each of these have different uses, so it’s really hard to pick.
Gel pens or colored pencils? Colored pencils all the way. I used to be pro gel pens, but they bleed through the paper and stain everything else. Plus, colored pencils you can shade together, whereas that’s much harder with gel pens.
What is your favorite flower? I don’t really have a favorite flower… I love the colors of many different flowers and the types, so I don’t think I can pick one.
Do you prefer to write by hand or type? It very much depends. I love handwriting, but it hurts my hand after long periods of time and is harder to make sense of well. So, I prefer handwriting, but typing is often more practical for me.
What is your favorite book (besides the Bible), and why? This is an impossible question as Melody well knows. One of my top favorites is Dune. It has wild adventures and romance and is just an awesome story. I love how well it is written. But I love so many other books, that this is really not even a scratch of the surface of the books I love.
What is your favorite book of the bible? My favorite book of the Bible is Malachi. Not for any particular reason, but I feel like it often gets skipped over and forgotten, and when I was younger I decided I wanted to memorize the entire thing. I didn’t, but it was one of the first books I really read for myself.
For Abby’s answers:
1. I write about many different things on the blog: devos, book recs, random posts, etc. I do it because it’s fun and I love it and also because, most of the time, you guys seem to enjoy what I write too.
2. There was never really a time in my life when I was like "Yes, verily henceforth I shall be a writer!" or the modern english equivalent. I was a very young reader (shoutout to the Rainbow Magic series) and like a lot of kids who were big readers, I tried to write my own stories as I got older. Now that I'm the age that I am, writing is just a hobby (plus needing to do it for academic stuff) and I don't intend to make it into a career. I enjoy it, but there are other art forms that I am much better at and are a lot more fun for me. That being said, I ADORE editing, which is definitely a big aspect of wrting.
3. My dream job is to be a high school theater choreographer. I love dance, kids, teaching, and theater, so this would be awesome!
4. Hmmm this is tricky. We have so many rabbits where I live and they eat our blueberry bushes, which is incredibly annoying, but hamsters really don't last very long. My cousin had one for about two years before her cat took one swipe and he was gone (RIP Russell the Hamster). They're both adorable, but I'd probably have to say rabbits. However it'd have to be a pet rabbit, not a wild one.
5. Probably Substack, because there are other music apps out there but nothing really like Substack. And I don't really use Pinterest all that much.
6. GEL PENS ALL THE WAY
7. Red carnations (Hadestown anyone?)
8. I prefer to type but writing by hand can also be really satisfying if you have a good pen
9. Oh goodness don't ask me this question; there's wayyy to many. I did just finish Sunrise on the Reaping though, so that's probably my favorite as of right now.
10. Revelation for sure, because it's so weird. When I was younger I would read it for fun because it was athe part of the Bible most similar to a fantasy book, except I knew it was true which made it even more awesome. I also really enjoy Psalms, the Gospel according to John, and Song of Solomon.
For LeaRose’s answers:
Why do you write about what you write about? I write songs, poetry, devotions and occasionally a story, but mainly the first two as a way to process my feelings, make a point, or let my mind travel out of this world. I really enjoy digging into the Bible, so writing devotions gives me the kick to research passages and search myself in a way to inspire others.
When did you first decide that you wanted to be a writer, and what led you to that decision? There was never really a moment where I felt, “yeah I’m going to be a writer.” As I’ve traveled through life, writing sort of just wove itself into the patterns at a young age and I let it take me where it wished.
What is your dream job? My dream job? Professional singer/songwriter all the way!!! I love performances of any kind and singing/songwriting is a major part of my life. The stage is my happy place, not because I crave attention or necessarily need the spotlight, but because I long to share my work with others.
Rabbits or hamsters? (Because cats versus dogs is too basic!) I prefer rabbits for sure…hamsters are just kind of rat-like, not that I’m scared of rats (I’ve actually held mice and their kind in the palm of my hand XD). I just don’t have positive feelings of adoration toward them like I might when I see a little lop-eared bunny.
If you could only use Substack, Spotify, or Pinterest, which one would you use and why? With all honesty…. I’d use Spotify. Why? Because, I know, big surprise, it’s a great place to release original music and promote songs, not to mention I love a good jam while I’m doing yard work.
Gel pens or colored pencils? GEL PENS!!! So satisfying.
What is your favorite flower? This probably isn’t very original, but I love tulips. I didn’t even know how many colors and varieties there were until I attended a tulip festival in Holland, MI, but even before that trip I’ve always thought tulips were gorgeous!
Do you prefer to write by hand or type? I always write my songs and poems by hand…it helps me portray the right emotion and I can easily go anywhere to channel my feelings with a notebook and pen. But if I’m writing a blog post I just type because, well, it’s faster.
What is your favorite book (besides the Bible), and why? Oof, this is a tough one. I definitely don’t have an absolute favorite, but the Hunger Games, Folk of the Air, and any Julie Klassen book are all pretty awesome.
What is your favorite book of the Bible? JAMES. This book always nips me right in the bud but also is very encouraging in times of struggle and is overall a personal book for me for many reasons.
