We’re a pretty small blog at the moment, so it’s helpful to know a little bit about our subscribers. So, if you wish, answer these three ice-breaker questions in this thread:
What is your name (or whatever you want to be called)?
What is one book you absolutely love (and why)?
What is one book you absolutely loathe (and why)?
If you don’t feel comfortable with discussions like this, you can also tell us about yourself via our reader survey (you can take it even if you comment too)!
In this discussion, the goal is for people to get to know each other, talk (or debate ;) about books and writing, and just strengthen The Young Author Section community. Have fun! And please be respectful <3
(A note to adults: This is a TEEN discussion. If you wish to participate, please be appropriate or you will be blocked and your commented will be removed. We want this to be a safe place for teen writers and readers. Thank you for understanding.)
2. Elsie Dinsmore books (amazing fictional story that encourages me in my Christian life)
3. My Pentatuech textbook (it was obviously written by someone who doesn't believe the Bible...)
I guess I was probably expected to put a fiction book...so in that case... Unfortunate Series Of Events... because I prefer happy endings...given the title I really don't know why I even decided to read them....
(Also, wouldn't this have been better posted on the chat?)
No this is a discussion thread!! They're just posts that are made for discussion rather than what's actually in the post 🙃. Also, I love you hating a textbook lol
Ah, ok. And I don't generally "hate" my textbooks, just this one had some things in it that irritated me...like a lot...and when I showed it to my dad, he agreed with me and said (and I quote) "I have no use for this textbook"
2. The Bible, The Wingfeather Saga, To Kill a Mockingbird, The Giver, and more!
3. Ooh. I'm glad you asked. Let's start with "Bears of the Ice: The Den of Forever Frost." If you're looking for a book with terrible prose and full of boredom, this book is for you! (It is also extremely violent. I don't mind it, but it is completely unnecessary and extrapolated. Seriously. A character bleeds to death after receiving a scratch. (I'm not joking!)) I am currently writing an essay on why it's so bad, but I have a lot of information to process and an article will not do it justice. It deserves an encyclopedia.
Next, we have Warriors: Fire and Ice. Now, book one is okay, and book four is lame, this one stands out (I haven't read book three; I was advised against reading it). Warriors: Fire and Ice is labeled as an Action/Adventure novel.
It is nothing of the sort.
It is 1% action, 2% adventure, 37% a diary of random pointless events, and 60% Romeo and Juliette melodramatic "tRuE loVE."
Nothing of importance happens in this book. And none of the characters are likable or relatable in any way.
It has been a moment ever since I read it, so maybe I need to read it again so I can get my full opinion on it.
I also am not a huge fan of Percy Jackson. I know, I know, it's a page turner, but I'm just not a huge fan of it. It isn't objectively bad, like the two mentioned above, but it does have some strong sentiments against Christianity (I'm not talking about the mythology, that is totally fine with me).
Yet another book I loathe (it's actually an essay) is "On Self-Reliance" by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
I don't need much commentary on that one; just read it for yourself and you'll see why I think he must have been eating poisonous berries while writing it.
I also really don't like my WIPs from 2022. They're just really cringey and I knew hardly anything about writing at that point.
2. One book????? I don't know, probably the Goose Girl, by Shannon Hale...
3. I don't LOATHE it, but I never finished Rainbow Valley, by L.M. Montgomery. I was reading through the series, but it was pretty boring compared to the others.
It wasn't bad, I just got sort of bored of it. I'm planning to actually read it at some point this Summer. I think I just miss Anne as the main character. 😂
Yeah...the weren't for me. Also, I didn't like how the margins, line spacing, and font were sooo huge just to make the book seem long when really all of the books are shorter than the first Harry Potter.
1. my name is C. L. Mullikin, also known as Sea to some of my friends here
2. I really love the Flavia de Luce series, Harry Potter, Coraline, Percy Jackson, Lord of the Flies, Little Women, etc (Such different genera's there)
3. I don't fancy Queen Hildegarde or Death Cure in the Maze Runner series (I don't have a ton of books I dislike)
My favorite book is The Tenant of Wildfell Hall by Anne Brontë. Hands down. Beautiful. Powerful. Beyond words.
Least favorite book… I’d have to say The Girl Who Looked Beyond the Stars. It was only 100 pages long. Zero plot. The MC was exceptionally stupid. Characters were shallow to non-existent. And again- not plot.
But to give the author credit, there was a very gripping cliffhanger where the MC got a bloody nose…
1. Melody (mel if you know me)

Oh yeah, in case you were wondering, I decided to change my profile to a pin name.
Oh my goodness I just finished The Giver. It was good!
1. Bee (a nickname)
2. One book????? I don't know, probably the Goose Girl, by Shannon Hale...
3. I don't LOATHE it, but I never finished Rainbow Valley, by L.M. Montgomery. I was reading through the series, but it was pretty boring compared to the others.
Goose Girl is so fun! Have you read the rest of the series?
That's fair, Rainbow Valley was not as good as the others.
I started reading Enna Burning, but I honestly forgot I was in the middle of it. I need to pick it up again over this Summer!
You definitely should! It does have a slow start, but so worth it
I was just a stage adaptation of Rainbow Valley 😂. What didn't you like about it?
It wasn't bad, I just got sort of bored of it. I'm planning to actually read it at some point this Summer. I think I just miss Anne as the main character. 😂
I know what you mean, I love Anne so much.
1. Aliyah (or Ali)
2. Words On Fire. A fictional historical story about the ban of the Lithuanian books. I absolutely loved reading it!
3. Uhhh… not sure…
Yesss I love Words on Fire (and all of Jennifer A Nielsen's books :)
Especially her Ascendance series!!
Oh that's still on my TBR list!! But my friend told me it was amazing and I love high fantasy so I have hope hopes
I love all of Jennifer A Neilsen's books but Words on Fire is my absolute favorite!!!
Ok, I guess I'll go even though I'm an author here. Let's see...
1. Jackson (but I go by jack)
2. Harry Potter (because they're such glorious masterpieces!)
3. Keeper of the Lost Cities (because the writing style sucks and it ripped off Harry Potter and it's very dumb anyway)
Feel free to debate me on this 😁
I've heard about KotLC. It's sounds like garbage.
It really is... the romance and cliche characters and plot... ugh, it sucked
Yeah...the weren't for me. Also, I didn't like how the margins, line spacing, and font were sooo huge just to make the book seem long when really all of the books are shorter than the first Harry Potter.
