This is a very interesting topic. I think that it's not destructive, and can be very helpful. I've only done it to one or two books, and obviously only books that we own. Sometimes it is really annoying to read a book that has already been annotated, but only when I disagree with the notes, or it looks like it was written by a seventh grader taking a literature class and putting down exactly what the teacher explains, or defining 'old-fashioned' words that most people would know. AnYwAy. May have had that happen before. But other times the notes have made really good points, and pointed out things that I would have missed. So I think the main point is- if you are going to annotate and mark up a book, do it thoughtfully. Is this really worth pointing out? Is this passage so good that I want all people to see it especially by highlighting it? As long as you put careful thought into it, I think it's okay.
